DIET INFOMRATION

LOW FODMAP DIET

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are specific types of carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leading to fermentation by gut bacteria, excess gas, and fluid retention in the colon.

THE III-STEP PROCESS

The low-FODMAP diet is a three-step Plan designed to manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other digestive issues by restricting specific short-chain carbohydrates that can trigger bloating and gas. The low-FODMAP diet is not meant to be a permanent restriction.

STEP I:

Elimination (2–6 weeks): Strictly avoid all high-FODMAP foods to allow your digestive system to calm down and symptoms to subside.

Fruits: Apples, pears, cherries, peaches, plums, watermelon, and most dried or canned fruits.

Vegetables: Garlic, onions, asparagus, broccoli, mushrooms, cauliflower, and leeks.

Grains: Wheat, rye, and barley products (e.g., standard breads, cereals, and pastas).

Dairy: Cow's milk, yogurt, soft cheeses (brie, ricotta), ice cream, and cream.

Proteins: Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, and some processed meats containing garlic or onion.

Nuts/Seeds: Cashews and pistachios.

Sweeteners: Honey, agave, high-fructose corn syrup, and sugar-free candies containing sugar alcohols (sorbitol, mannitol).

Foods to Enjoy : You can comfortably eat the following low-FODMAP alternatives during this phase.

Fruits: Bananas (unripe), blueberries, strawberries, oranges, and grapes.

Vegetables: Carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplant, kale, spinach, and potatoes.

Grains: Rice, quinoa, oats, and certified gluten-free breads or pastas.

Dairy & Alternatives: Lactose-free dairy, almond milk (check labels), and hard cheeses (cheddar, parmesan).

Proteins: Eggs, fish, poultry, and most plain, unprocessed meats.

Nuts/Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and peanuts.

STEP II:

Reintroduction (6–8 weeks): Systematically re-introduce high-FODMAP foods one by one (e.g., trying an apple for three days) to pinpoint exactly which groups and amounts trigger your symptoms.

STEP III:

Personalization: Build a tailored, long-term diet where you only restrict the specific foods that cause you distress, allowing you to enjoy a varied and nutritious diet.
